Umbria is much less explored than its Tuscan sister and therefore holds many more little known treasures. Its outstanding wine and olive oil are just two highlights. The rustic beauty of its landscape, the decidedly human dimensions of the lifestyle, and the unexpected silence in some of the smaller villages, recall the simple ways of an ancient world. There is no better way to experience these gems than by a slow journey that embraces the food, wine and stunning walks in this strikingly beautiful landlocked region of Central Italy.
Our journey commences and ends in Perugia with time in the well known destinations of Orvieto and Assisi along with the lesser known hideaways of Norcia and Panicale. The Sibillini Mountains offer a very special natural amphitheatre, unique in all of Europe. Springtime in the Piano Grande (Great Plain) boasts a spectacular display of blooming alpine flowers, while autumn delivers green lush peaceful landscapes.
There’s a certain serenity that envelops the region of Umbria, a land where time seems to stand still and the friendliness of the locals is ever present. Known for its medieval charm, Umbria is also a treasure trove of archaeological surprises, offering a glimpse into the ancient world of the Etruscans.
We experience the small villages and important cities, including Assisi where we visit the Basilica of St. Francis, a spiritual and architectural masterpiece nestled in the hills of Umbria. Built in honour of St. Francis, the patron saint of Italy, this sacred site is symbolic of the incredible art and architecture of this region. We learn the secrets of Umbrian cuisine, visit galleries and artisan studios, walk through areas of outstanding natural beauty and enjoy sensational wine and olive oil tasting.
Our accommodation throughout Umbria is in delightful luxury hotels in cities, towns and the countryside.
